Cucumber Scenario Outline Table Tutorial

Cucumber Scenario Outline Table can be used to push a bulk of data into a test scenario. Where Data Tables are used to run a single scenario multiple times using different combinations of values and parameters an Outline Table is used to pass in a vast amount of data into a single scenario run. Outline Tables are mainly used to pass in a collection of data in one go.

  1. Hi,

I really like your videos and I appreciate your efforts in creating these videos 🙂 . Good thing about them is they are crisp, clear and to the point…
    I have a quick question for you…
I am trying to understand if there is any way to read External Data (like Excel) on to the feature file directly ? or else how do we handle large volumes of data in Cucumber ?.
Ex: If i want to validate login credentials for say 100 users it would be really clumsy to feed in all the data using Scenario Outline…

    I appreciate your response.

    Regards,
    Raghu

    1. Hey Raghu,

Thanks for your message. I have not covered reading in external data from a Feature file but I have covered the concept of reading in data from excel file in my WebDriver video series at https://youtu.be/MSTdEyMNVds. This is a rather long three part video but the video does go into detail about reading from an external data source.

To answer your question and request, no I have not created any videos on such a topic yet but I am considering it for my relaunched Cucumber WebDriver series.

But in the interim, can you not put all the names in an external file (such as plain text notepad), use your Cucumber Feature file to simply provide the path to the file and do the login in the Step Definition?

      Best Regards,
      Mo
